What are the benefits of custom Cabinets?

  1. Custom Cabinets are built to the size and dimensions of your home and family.

Cabinets are an essential part of any house or business. Whether they house crucial documents such as a filing cabinet, or display the most wonderful collection of family china, custom-built cabinets speak of character and personality. Therefore, the first and most obvious advantage is how they meet the specific needs of consumers. For example, suppose the shape and size of your kitchen is not among the most common dimensions. Since pre-fabricated cabinets come in standard lengths, such as 18, 24, 30 and 36-inches, fillers are needed to make up the differences in lengths.

A bay window, a double oven, a kitchen desk or island cabinet all add unusual dimensions to kitchen cabinets. To keep from wasting costly space, custom cabinets are worth the cost difference. In addition, pre-fabricated cabinets usually include man-made wood products covered with vinyl. Custom cabinets can be built using all plywood parts and even solid lumber if desired.

Another advantage of custom cabinets is their height. Kitchen base cabinets are commonly built to 36-inches in height including the countertop. For some families, this is not high enough while for others it is too high. Custom cabinets can be built to specific dimensions including height.

  1. Custom Cabinets can be tailored to your unique needs

Along with the advantage of custom height, comes the functionality of the cabinets. A section of drawers, for example, can include two large and one small or one large and two or three small drawers. They can also be customized according to what is to be stored in them. Imagine, having a drawer that is custom built to hold the electric blender when it is not in use or the coffee maker after making the morning coffee. The wall cabinets can be designed to have lighting underneath to help you see when making the morning coffee.

The upper cabinets, sometimes called wall cabinets, are also built in the same pre-fabricated widths as the base cabinets. However, the same advantage can also be realized. Custom upper cabinet designs include glass doors, which is something you won’t see much of in base cabinets. The advantages of custom cabinets are only limited by the homeowner’s imagination and ability to describe how they should look.

The final advantage covered in this article is countertops. Pre-fabricated countertops will not be a mixture of hardwood for a cutting board and granite for serving areas. Today, there are many different avenues to pursue in countertop material. With the refining of natural stone, many are using products like granite, marble and even slate for kitchen countertops because they are more durable than laminated plastic. Whatever the desire, the possibilities are endless when it comes to realizing the advantages that come in a set of custom cabinets.

  1. Custom Cabinets are high quality and built to last

Custom cabinets are made by skilled cabinet makers by hand - not on assembly lines. Cabinet makers take pride in their work, using quality materials for a finished product that’s a work of art. Custom cabinets are quality construction that’s built to last.

Here’s a quick overview of the differences between custom and stock cabinetry construction:

  Custom Cabinetry Stock Cabinetry
Components Plywood Particle Board
Joints Dovetail, Dowel or mortise-and-tenon Glued, Nailed or Screwed
Corner Braces Wood glue blocks Stapled plastic corners
Drawer Slides Hidden undermount Side Slide Brackets

  1. Local Sourcing –

If you are concerned about the origin of the wood used for your cabinets, then you immediately see the benefit of custom cabinetry. You have a much broader choice of wood for your project including using local or domestic hardwoods that lessen the impact on the environment.

  1. Only the elements you need

You can select unique cabinet and drawer combinations that fit your cooking and baking style creating a more efficient kitchen. For example, your kitchen can incorporate a cutlery cabinet, spice cabinet, cookie sheet cabinet, trash drawer, pullout cutting boards, wine rack, or island cabinetry that opens from both sides.

  1. Personal Selection

Stock cabinets may include “hundreds of combinations” but you are still limited by the product availability. Custom cabinets provide you with a personal customized selection of wood, style, finish, and hardware to address your goals and needs. Stock cabinetry is made in an assembly line in batches at different times and often results in non-matching materials and finishes. Custom cabinetry is made per order with hand selected woods and is all finished at the same time.

What are some of my options for Custom Cabinetry?

Cornerstone Framed Cabinetry

Canyon Creek's Cornerstone line features framed, Inset and Beaded Inset cabinetry made in the tradition of fine furniture. Below, you'll find the differences between the three styles; wood species selections, construction techniques and much more.

Framed cabinetry features a face frame that is placed over the front of the cabinet box; the doors are then attached to this frame. With Inset construction, the cabinet doors and drawer fronts are recessed (inset) and flush with the face frame. Beaded Inset cabinetry has a small groove routed into the face frame, outlining the perimeter of the door.

Millennia Frameless Cabinetry

Canyon Creek's Millennia cabinetry features the full access functionality of frameless construction and the flexibility to fit your style. Look below for an explanation of frameless cabinetry, our construction technique, wood species and more

Frameless cabinetry does not have a face frame - hinges are secured to the inside of the cabinet and the doors overlay the cabinet box directly. Door and drawer fronts fit closely together and give a clean, uniform appearance. Because there is no frame overlapping the box, you have full access to the contents.

Katana Frameless Cabinetry
